The Grantshouse Newsletter                      No: 11  - June 2008
Editorial -
The wild gorse is now in full bloom around the village and we can see that summer is on the way, so I’ve featured a few pictures in this issue of sunny views around Grantshouse and Houndwood. It is a pity the newsletter is printed in black and white as they look so much better in full colour as they are on the Home page of this web site!

The Grantshouse Community Council’s new committee will be elected at their meeting on June 10th at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend and there is still a little time for nominations for election to the committee to be submitted to Walter Wyse or Christopher Haywood.

The Police in Lothian and the Borders are committed to keeping in touch with their Local Communities. To enhance our opportunities to speak with a local officer and discuss any police issues that may be affecting us, as individuals or our community, it has been arranged for a Police Community Contact Vehicle to attend Grantshouse on Wednesday 25th June at 1.00pm.

The Outward Bound Centre – A feasiblity study is now underway through a village company limited by guarantee to look into the practicalities of a community buy-out of the building and its future use. For more information and to get involved please contact Walter or Meg Wyse. (contact details are below).

The Grantshouse Community Trust’s  Committee and Trustees have decided to keep the Trust going after all! The Trust is run for the benefit of all the residents in Grantshouse and Houndwood but due to the many and varied commitments of the committee members recently, resignations had to be accepted. As no one else seemed inclined to take over, closing the Trust seemed the best option a couple of months ago.

However, after careful thought and consideration we decided to try to keep the Trust going. We are very pleased and grateful to have been joined on the committee by John Prentice, Dawn Blackman, Stephanie and Lexy Patterson and

After our AGM, which will be held in the near future, all the Trustees and officers of the committee will be announced as well as details of our proposed activities.

The SWRI - found May a busy month this year! The Women’s Rural Eye Valley Group held their AGM in Grantshouse last week but the week before we entertained the members from all the other Rural groups in the Eye Valley for the afternoon. Following the interesting annual reports from the other Rural Groups, Margaret Fleming provided the entertainment for everyone, introducing the ladies to ceildgh dancing. However, they didn’t need very much coercion to take to the floor and twirl around the hall dancing with glee!

All too soon it was time for tea and the Grantshouse Rural ladies, as usual, excelled themselves in providing mountains of fabulous home-made goodies! Including sandwiches, scones, quiche, sausage rolls and cakes and biscuits of all kinds. Finally, the raffle contained almost enough prizes to ensure everyone was a winner when it was drawn at the end of the afternoon!

We all look forward to a peaceful evening this month when we hold our own AGM in conjunction with a cheese and wine tasting!

The Horticultural Society hope all your plans for your entries to their Annual Show on Sunday 24th August 2008 are now underway. With new classes in the Schedule they are hoping for a bumper entry for their horticultural and industrial classes this year! Remember, there are a variety of classes for fruit and flowers, plants and photography, cakes and candy, pies and preserves and special classes and prizes for children to enter too!

The Wednesday Club – The Wednesday Club enjoyed lovely weather for their summer trip to the Coldstream Museum and the Hirsel in May. A leisurely drive through the countryside still left time for some of us to wander around the local shops in Coldstream. While others remained intrigued by the exhibits in the museum before we were all driven on to the Hirsel. The energetic among us were dropped off at the entrance to a woodland pathway to enjoy a through the woods walk to the Hirsel. The lazier ones among us, including me, stayed on the coach for the drive past the golf course to the Hirsel. We all had the chance wander around and admire the various crafts displayed at the centre and make our purchases, before a delicious tea with home-made scones and cakes was served. Many thanks to everyone including Bill, our regular coach driver, who helped to make it such a super day-out for us all!

The Alamo continues to flourish on the last Friday every month and the new program for the next three events can be found if you click here!

The Village Hall has had a bit of a face-lift!
Very attractive new blinds have been fitted to the kitchen windows and compliment the new double glazed windows beautifully.

But now for a confession and promise of penance!

We all want the village to look clean and tidy and attractive too so the Village Hall committee had arranged to meet at the Hall for a ‘gardening day’ in May but everyone except two local ‘saints’ forgot!

I, for one, was further embarrassed when told that Angie and Margaret, without a word to anyone, had made amends on our behalf the very next day when with Walter and Meg, they pruned the very overgrown Berberis bush in the back garden at the Hall and cleared away all the clippings too!

They all deserve to be awarded gold stars and silver halos! Nevertheless, I'm sure I and everyone else apologizes and we promise to try to turn up and help out next time! Perhaps they can just sit quietly and supervise our toil! ‘Twill be no more than we or they deserve!

There is someone else in the village who tends to keep his 'talents hidden under a bush' but surely deserves a gold star too!

I 'caught him on camera' strimming the verges and also spied him mowing the grass at the edge of the road a few days later.

Guess who?>

He had also laid new turf on the bare patches. Here's hoping the lorries don't drive over them! (now, there’s a small clue to his identity!) Grantshouse is a 'tiny village with a big heart and a warm welcome' in so many 'hidden' ways, so a huge ‘Thank you’ to everyone who actually ‘does their bit’ to make sure we keep Grantshouse a clean and tidy village and a lovely place to stay! All your efforts do not go entirely unnoticed!

Happy Holidays! - (JB. Ed)
