The Farms

Welcome to Hoardweel Farm!

In the most picturesque fairytale setting, Hoardweel farm nestles in the valley that carries the famous salmon river the Whiteadder, a major tributary of the Tweed.

At first sight, the view of the farm takes your breath away and one almost expects a friendly hobbit or a character from the Tales of Narnia to appear beside you!

However, apart from the view, this is no fairytale landscape but a working and busy farm steading on the A6112; the road that leaves the A1 at Grantshouse for Duns in the Scottish Borders.

David and Elaine Stebbings and their three daughters, have farmed the 500 acres at Hoardwheel since 1991 and a further 500 acres of land nearby at Burnhouses.

On this hill farm they breed and rear the finest beef cattle, sheep and pigs organically, becoming certified by the Soil Association in 2000.

All their animals are grass finished and they grow their own crops of barley, oats, beans, kale and turnips as winter forage for the animals.

The Cattle - the breeds of cattle bred at Hoardweel Farm include the well known Highland Cattle, Aberdeen Angus and the rarer breed the Shorthorns. In the wintertime the Shorthorns, and sometimes the Aberdeen Angus, are brought in when due to calve and then housed in comfort in the warm dry sheds. Whereas the Highlands much prefer to live and calve outside throughout the year, managing to cope unaided and living very well!

The Sheep on the farm are the pure bred Scotch Blackface and Scotch Mules (a Bluefaced Leicester crossed with Scotch Blackface) The Scotch Mules are bred to either a Suffolk or Texel Ram. These ewes are always brought in to the sheds for lambing and turned out to graze when their lambs are old enough. The pure bred 'Blackies' prefer to live and lamb outside throughout the year, a lifestyle they've enjoyed for many generations.

The Pigs bred at Hoardweel Farm are the rare breed Berkshires. They are always born, reared and finished outside in the fields on the farm. Living a free range lifestyle, they can sleep in cosy arcs with plenty of straw bedding, and are free to wander the fields rooting around as happy pigs should do! They are all very docile and friendly, including boars and produce the deliciously tasty and beautifully marbled meat that the breed is so famous for all over the world.

Beef, Lamb and Pork

All the meat produced at Hoardweel Farm is traditionally hung for a minimum of twenty three days for the best of flavours. Then its professionally butchered locally, prior to fast freezing. The beef, lamb and pork, from sausages, bacon and burgers, to special cuts and joints or even a whole or half lamb or pig for your freezer, can be supplied.
