The history of our village
can be traced back to the 6th May 1809 and a gentleman called Thomas Grant.
It's interesting and possibly unique that we can be so precise.
In 1999, we celebrated the
launch of the 'Grantshouse' book, written by Jim Crosbie. He was encouraged
and helped with his research by the residents, who also provided many
photographs which are included in the book and now form part of a much valued
collection of memorabilia owned by the village.
With the permission of the
author, extracts from the book are published in the history pages, pending a possible
re-print of the in the near future!
As for the sign post, approaching from the
north you would see that Berwick is seventeen miles further on and from the
south, that Edinburgh is still forty-one miles away! In those days most
journeys would probably have been by 'Shanksy's Pony'. ie: on foot!
